About greenways

"Greenways are trails or natural corridors used in harmony with their environmental function and potential for sport, tourism and recreation. Improve possibilities for transportation, recreation and tourism, and encourage a healthier lifestyle and sustainable use of local resources." - Ökotárs Alapítvány.

Ormánság Greenway initiative

Ormánság Greenway alternative rural development initiative was started by Sustainable Ormánság Nonprofit Ltd. in 2009. We are working in the socially and geographically disadvantaged Ormánság area in the Danube-Drava National Park. First we started our local working group which was coordinated by the Nonprofit Ltd up to nowdays. At the beginning our initiative was supported by the Norway Grants and our professional work was helped by Ökotárs Foundation.

Objectives and tasks

We would like to preserve the environmental and cultural values of Dráva river area for the next generation. Call attention of local people to the importance of protecting the local heritage. Encourage co-operation between the local population to enhance the local communities. We create together the image of greenway in the area and we are offering local products which ensure income for local people. We set up local eco-tourism programme packages which include excursion with local tourist guide, canoe tour on Fekete-víz, local food and original recipes, rural accomodation, bicycle tour in Drava floodplain area, information about all attractions, curiosities and legends.

In 2013 significant development has started with support of Hungary-Croatia IPA Cross-border Co-operation Programme which ensure setting 200 km greenway capillar network in Ormánság area and more 120 km long distance greenway track which connect villages along the future greenway route from Kémes to Latinovac across the Dráva river.
